Many beginners stop here — "I don't know." Experienced birders do something different. They weigh the evidence they gathered, make the most likely identification, record how confident they are, and keep learning.
That's the final step of the Flyway Method: COMMIT.
Most new birders believe there are only two outcomes.
Real birding isn't binary. Almost every observation falls somewhere between those two, and you will almost never have perfect information. The goal was never certainty — it's the best-supported decision available.
Look back through the Method. You predicted what was likely. You read the structure. You watched how it moved. You found the mark that mattered.
Waiting for one more feather, one more angle or one more second rarely changes the outcome — and the bird usually leaves first. Eventually every birder has to decide.
Confidence isn't certainty. It's a measure of how well the evidence supports your conclusion. Good birders get very good at asking "how confident should I be?" rather than "am I absolutely right?" Those are different questions, and only one of them has an answer.
People assume every observation has a perfect answer waiting to be uncovered. Sometimes it does. Often it doesn't — birds fly away, weather interferes, views are brief, and some individuals genuinely can't be taken to species.
Experienced birders are comfortable saying “probably”, “likely”, “I'm not sure”. That isn't weakness. It's good science, and it makes their records worth trusting.
You could wait for a perfect view. Or the bird disappears forever. Either conclusion above is better than refusing to think because the view wasn't perfect — because both are recorded with a confidence you can later check.
That's scientific thinking, and it's the habit that separates a birder who improves from one who plateaus.
Experienced birders don't stop when they've named the bird. They check a guide, review a photo, listen again, look at recent local reports. Sometimes that confirms the call. Sometimes it revises it. Both outcomes improve the next one.
Beginners avoid committing because they're afraid of being wrong. That fear is the thing slowing them down — a call you never make can't teach you anything.
Every incorrect identification leaves something behind. You remember the confusion. You notice the missing clue next time. The distinction gets easier. And experienced birders change their minds readily — a better photo, a longer look, a different angle. Revising an ID isn't failure; it's exactly how learning works.
Flyway asks you to work through the whole process — and to state how sure you are — before it reveals anything. Then it shows what you noticed, what you missed, which clue mattered most, and how confident that conclusion really deserved to be.

Record what you did see and commit to the most specific level the evidence supports — a family or group rather than a species, with an honest confidence level. “Probable Sharp-shinned Hawk”, or simply “accipiter”, is a real observation. Refusing to think because the view was imperfect teaches you nothing.
Yes — it's good practice. Experienced birders routinely record probable and possible identifications. Stating your confidence honestly is more useful than claiming a certainty the view didn't support, and it's what makes your records trustworthy to other people.
Guessing ignores the evidence and picks one. Committing follows the evidence to the most likely conclusion and states how strongly it's supported. On a checklist they can look identical; the thinking behind them is completely different, and only one of them improves.
Because it lets you find out whether your confidence matches your accuracy. Someone who says “sure” and is right 60% of the time is overconfident and doesn't know it. Tracking confidence against outcome — calibration — is one of the fastest ways to improve judgment in the field.
Find the clue that matters most. How experienced birders look for the one observation that decides a case, instead of collecting every detail they can see.
