Detect records the clue: it bounded, probed the mud, clung to bark, or called in a repeated rhythm. Interpret asks what that clue reveals about flight mechanics, feeding strategy, habitat use, and likely family.
That conversion from observation to meaning is the third step of the Flyway Method: INTERPRET.
Recording a clue without asking what it means
A beginner may remember that the bird hovered or stayed low in reeds, then return to plumage as if the behavior were incidental.
Experts connect action to function: hovering implies a feeding strategy; probing implies a substrate; skulking low in reeds reshapes the shortlist. Context makes the clue useful.
Every bird has a signature
Think about recognizing a friend across a parking lot. You don't identify them by the color of their shirt, you recognize the way they walk, their posture, how they carry themselves.
Birds are no different. Every species moves with a characteristic rhythm, and those rhythms aren't habits. They're adaptations, which is why they stay so consistent.
Four signatures you can learn today
Organize birds by how they move and a classification system appears that has nothing to do with plumage.
Rides the air
Big wings, minimal flapping, circling upward on rising air. Effort goes into staying up, not going forward.
Bounces along
A few quick beats, then wings folded shut, then beats again. The flight path visibly undulates.
Goes somewhere
Fast, level, purposeful, little variation. Steady wingbeats from A to B with no messing about.
Holds position
Almost motionless over one spot, wings working constantly, head locked still while it searches below.
Watch how a bird uses its place
Where a bird spends its time is useful. How it uses that time is often decisive.
Hitch vertically up a trunk in short jerks, propped on a stiff tail. Almost nothing else moves like that.
Walk down trunks head-first, a behavior so unusual that seeing it once is effectively an identification.
Perch, launch, snatch an insect, return to the same branch. Then do it again. And again.
Slow deliberate walking, long bill working the mud, constant searching rather than sudden strikes.
Tiny, restless, inspecting every crack and crevice, rarely still for more than a moment.
Movement becomes identity. Once you've watched a nuthatch walk down a trunk, you will never need a field mark for one again.
Behavior is difficult to fake
Color changes with light. Juveniles look different from adults. Molting birds are missing feathers. Winter plumage barely resembles summer.
Behavior stays put. A bird that bounds in June bounds in December.
Every one of those actions carries information, and experienced birders read them without consciously deciding to.

Three readings, one second, and the possibilities have collapsed to a single family. That's INTERPRET, and it's the difference between a bird that got away and a bird you identified.
Change the question you ask
Instead of "what color was it?", which usually has no answer, try "what was it doing?"
That single question often narrows the field further than any field mark, and it works on views too brief for anything else.
Most birding tools freeze birds into photographs
